About the SCI Cost Calculator

Welcome to the Praxis SCI Cost Calculator. This tool helps estimate the lifetime costs associated with living with a spinal cord injury (SCI). It can be used to calculate your own projected costs or those of another individual.

The calculator was developed with direct input from people living with SCI (PLEX), clinicians specializing in SCI care, and health economists. To learn more about its development, you can read our publication here.

This is an ongoing project at Praxis. While we strive for accuracy, we recognize there are limitations. The tool will continue to be refined with input from the SCI community, including PLEX, clinicians, researchers, health systems, insurers, and government partners.

Canadian Context

The calculator uses Canadian-specific cost data. Initial costs (such as acute hospital care and rehabilitation) and ongoing healthcare costs (including specialist care and medications) are based on prior Praxis research and are not modifiable by users. Life expectancy estimates and disability-related health impacts are also fixed and reflect Canadian averages.

All other cost categories are user-modifiable and can be adjusted to reflect an individual’s actual expenses, regardless of where they live.

How to Use the Calculator

You will be asked to enter your estimated costs and how frequently they occur. Sections include injury profile, income, durable and disposable medical equipment, vehicle expenses, everyday living costs, home renovations, and attendant care.

Many fields include pre-populated estimates that you can adjust. If a listed cost does not apply to you, you may enter zero.

If you have expenses not listed, you can add them using the “Add custom item” option within each section.

Each cost item includes a drop-down description explaining what is covered.

Only include costs directly related to SCI. For example, under “Food,” enter only additional costs attributable to SCI (e.g., prepared meals, grocery delivery, inaccessible stores), not total annual food expenses.

After entering your information, click “Calculate” at the top-right of the tool to generate your estimate.

Understanding Your Report

The calculator generates a report estimating lifetime costs based on the profile you created. The report includes both a summary and a detailed breakdown by category and item.

You can download your report using the “Export” button at the top-right of the tool.

Please note that this report provides an estimate only. Individual costs may vary significantly due to changes in health status, employment, inflation, or personal circumstances. This tool is intended for informational purposes.
